In 2012, The Headies introduced the Rookie of the year contest, which is an opportunity every up-and-coming Nigerian music artiste looks forward to competing at and winning. The artiste must not have a major track record or prior music accomplishments and the lucky winner via popular votes, gets rewarded with the opportunity to perform on The Headies stage. MzKiss- the Capital Goretti signed act came into limelight with her hit single “Ówo Meta” which gained grounds due to her potent indigenous rap style. Dice Ailes - the Chocolate City signee has impressed his fans with his unique sound and style of music. His popular single “Machinery” had music fans rocking, before he released “Miracle” featuring Lil’ Kesh as a follow up single. Terry Apala - Signed to Nelson Jack Music, Apala released “Champagne Shower” with an interesting twist of Fuji and Trap music, which he’s gradually being known for. Dremo - Signed to DMW Records owned by Davido, Dremo has since his entry into the music scene garnered the attention of music lovers after his single “Fela”, a cover of the popular song by “Desiinger” titled Panda”. Mayorkun- Also signed to DMW Records, Mayorkun gained popularity with his single “Eleko”. This happened after the success of this single. To be legible for the Rookie competition, artiste must have at least one officially released single in the Nigerian music market and not any album. Also, the Artiste must not be an Headies’ nominee or won any award category at The Headies and must be a citizen of Nigeria. The first ever Rookie of the Year competition was won by Dammy Krane and Burna Boy after both artistes emerged with a tie result via public voting. In 2013, Ink Edwards emerged the winner, followed by Mavin Act, Reekado Banks in 2014. Tiny Entertainment signee, YCee won the category in 2015. This year, after popular demand, The Headies announces its nominees for the Rookie of the Year 2016. In no order, Capital Hills/The Goretti signee, Mz. Kiss features as the only female. Also, making the list is Chocolate City’s Dice Ailes alongside Nelson Jack Music act - Terry Apala. Completing the highly competitive list is DMW record label mates, Dremo and Mayorkun.
